Working Conditions:

A SEN Teaching Assistant will primarily work in a classroom environment within an educational institution. They may also provide support during outdoor activities or school trips. The role involves regular interaction with students, teachers, and other professionals involved in the education of students with SEN. The work schedule typically follows standard school hours, Monday to Friday. The position is temporary and expected to be full-time, with the possibility of extension based on the needs of the school. This role is for mainstream school settings.

 

Job Duties:

  • Provide support to students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in a classroom setting
  • Assist the teacher in implementing individualised education plans (IEPs) for students
  • Support students with their academic, social, and emotional development
  • Adapt teaching materials and strategies to meet the specific needs of students with SEN
  • Help create a positive and inclusive learning environment
  • Monitor and track student progress, providing feedback to the teacher
  • Assist with classroom management and behaviour management
  • Collaborate with the teacher and other professionals to develop appropriate interventions and strategies
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students as needed
  • Assist with personal care tasks, such as toileting and feeding, for students with physical disabilities or medical needs

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working with students with Special Educational Needs
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Patience and empathy when working with students
  • Basic understanding of child development and learning processes
  • Good organisational and time management skills

 

Education:

  • Minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths

 

Experience:

  • Prior experience in a similar role or working with children

 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with different types of Special Educational Needs
  • Knowledge of relevant teaching and learning strategies for students with SEN
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • Proficiency in using basic computer applications

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching Assistant qualification
  • Additional training or qualifications in Special Educational Needs
