SEND Teaching Assistant — Community Special School (Ages 2–19)

About the School

This is a community special school providing all-through education for pupils aged 2 to 19. The school supports learners with a wide range of needs, including autism (ASD), moderate to profound and multiple learning difficulties (MLD, SLD, PMLD), and associated medical, sensory, or communication needs. Every pupil has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

The school also has a strong reputation for inclusive sport and physical education, ensuring pupils of all abilities can thrive through active participation, teamwork, and wellbeing initiatives.

Role Overview

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you’ll work closely with teachers and therapists to deliver individualised learning and support. The role combines classroom-based assistance with broader involvement in personal development, sport, and life skills—helping pupils to access education, build confidence, and develop independence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored support for pupils with a variety of learning, communication, and sensory needs.

  • Assist in delivering lessons across the full age range (2–19), from early years through to post-16.

  • Encourage participation in inclusive sports, wellbeing programmes, and physical activities adapted for all learners.

  • Support vocational, social, and independence-focused learning opportunities.

  • Implement strategies from multi-disciplinary teams, including speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and behaviour specialists.

  • Contribute to a calm, nurturing, and positive classroom environment.

  • Assist with personal care, communication aids, and sensory support where required.

Skills & Attributes

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEND, ideally across a range of needs.

  • Empathy, patience, and resilience, with a genuine commitment to inclusion.

  • Confidence in promoting positive behaviour and wellbeing.

  • Ability to adapt communication and resources to meet diverse learning needs (e.g., using Makaton, PECS, or visual supports).

  • Team-player mindset, working closely with teachers, therapists, and families.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
