SEND Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEND Teaching Assistant to join a specialist setting in Peterlee. The school supports children and young people with a wide range of additional needs, including autism, SEMH, communication difficulties, and complex learning difficulties, with a strong focus on preparing pupils for lifelong success.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with a variety of SEND and complex needs

  • Assist in delivering structured learning pathways tailored to each pupil’s abilities

  • Support pupils with communication, sensory regulation, and emotional wellbeing

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and pastoral staff to ensure consistent support strategies

  • Encourage independence and confidence both in the classroom and through wider learning opportunities

About You

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEND (school, residential, or alternative settings)

  • Calm, patient, and adaptable in your approach

  • Understanding of autism, SEMH, or complex needs (desirable)

  • Knowledge of communication aids, visual supports, or sensory regulation strategies is an advantage

  • Thrive training or willingness to undertake additional SEND training is a bonus

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
