SEMH Teaching Assistant – Specialist Provision (Alnwick)

Full-time | Term time only | Long-term opportunity
Pay: £80–£95 per day

A Role with Purpose

If you’re an educator who believes in the power of connection, creativity and calm to transform learning for young people with additional needs, this could be your next step.

This is an opportunity to work in a forward-thinking special school in Alnwick, supporting pupils aged 2–19 with a range of complex needs including Autism (ASC), SEMH, SLD, and communication challenges. You’ll be joining a setting that goes beyond mainstream expectations—one that places well-being, personal growth, and emotional safety at the core of its approach.

Your Day-to-Day Impact

  • Support students 1:1 and in small groups to engage in learning and feel safe, seen and heard

  • Use consistent, trauma-informed strategies to support emotional regulation and behaviour

  • Encourage progress across communication, life skills, and curriculum subjects

  • Adapt resources and routines to suit individual sensory, emotional and learning needs

  • Work closely with experienced staff, therapists and families to create joined-up support

  • Be a calm, grounded presence—even in the face of challenging behaviour

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Relational Practice at the Core: You'll have time and space to build trust, not just manage behaviour

  • Specialist Training & Development: Ongoing CPD in SEND, therapeutic techniques, and inclusive education

  • Creativity Encouraged: Use your interests (art, drama, storytelling, outdoor learning) to enrich provision

  • Truly Inclusive Ethos: Join a team that believes all behaviour is communication and every child deserves to be understood

  • Collaborative, Reflective Culture: You’ll be part of a staff team that supports one another and grows together

Ideal Candidate

  • Experience working with young people with additional needs (ASC, SEMH, SLD) in education, care or support settings

  • Confident using visual supports, routines and low-arousal approaches

  • Emotionally intelligent, resilient, and able to stay calm under pressure

  • Reflective, proactive and open to learning from others

  • A driver or someone able to commute reliably to Alnwick—the school is in a rural location

What Staff Say

"There’s a strong sense of belonging here—not just for the pupils, but for the staff too. It’s not always easy, but the work is deeply meaningful."
