SEMH Teaching Assistant

Contract: Full-time, long-term
Start Date: Immediate / September 2025
We are seeking a committed and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils with social, emotional, and behavioural needs in a specialist setting in Sunderland. The school provides a nurturing environment where every child is encouraged to grow in confidence, resilience, and independence.
The Role
As an SEMH TA, you will:

Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH and behavioural challenges

Implement de-escalation strategies, restorative approaches, and consistent routines

Work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to create safe, structured learning environments

Support pupils in developing emotional regulation, social skills, and self-confidence

Actively contribute to a caring, inclusive school ethos that values each pupil’s potential
About You

Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, trauma, or challenging behaviour

Calm, confident, and consistent approach with strong behaviour management skills

Knowledge of restorative practice, Thrive, or other therapeutic approaches (or willingness to train)

Ability to build trust and positive relationships with pupils who may find school challenging

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
