We are working with a specialist SEMH provision in Sunderland that supports pupils who have struggled in mainstream education due to social, emotional and mental health needs. The school provides a therapeutic, nurturing environment where pupils can rebuild trust, develop confidence, and re-engage with learning. They are now looking to appoint a resilient and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their dedicated team.

Your role will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support tailored to each pupil’s emotional and academic needs

  • Using de-escalation strategies and a calm approach to manage challenging behaviour

  • Supporting pupils to develop emotional literacy, social skills and self-regulation

  • Working closely with pastoral and teaching teams to build consistent routines

  • Encouraging progress through positive relationships and structured interventions

You will need:

  • Experience working with young people with SEMH needs or behavioural challenges

  • A patient, empathetic and consistent attitude

  • The ability to remain calm under pressure and manage crisis situations

  • Confidence in setting boundaries and using positive behaviour strategies

  • An understanding of trauma-informed practice (desirable but training can be provided)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
