As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will support students in KS3-5 with social, emotional, and mental health needs under the guidance of the class teacher, SENCO, or SEN Manager. Your role is to create a nurturing, inclusive environment where students can thrive academically and emotionally. You will assist with emotional regulation, social skills, and mental wellbeing, while supporting learning in key subjects such as language, reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics. You will also play a key role in delivering personalised support plans and monitoring progress to ensure students feel confident and supported in their learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one or small group support to students with SEMH needs, focusing on emotional resilience, social skills, and self-esteem.
  • Assist in implementing personalised behaviour and emotional regulation plans to manage challenges effectively.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive environment where students feel respected and supported.
  • Support academic learning, helping students with concentration and positive peer relationships.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and SEN staff to deliver tailored support and monitor progress.
  • Maintain accurate records of student development and provide regular feedback to the team.
  • Promote student independence and confidence through targeted interventions.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience or strong interest in supporting students with SEMH needs, particularly those with emotional regulation or mental health challenges, is preferred.
  • Compassionate, patient, and empathetic approach with a genuine commitment to helping vulnerable learners thrive.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Ability to maintain a calm, positive, and supportive environment that promotes emotional well-being.
  • Flexibility, resilience, and teamwork skills to adapt in a dynamic school setting.
  • Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check and have the right to work in the UK.
