Mental Health Support Worker – Sunderland
Full-Time | September Start | Term Time Only

Do you want to support the mental health and emotional wellbeing of young people? Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of students who are struggling with anxiety, trauma, or social and emotional needs?

Protocol Education is working in partnership with a specialist school in Sunderland that supports children and young people with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. We are looking to appoint a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Support Worker to join their team and play a key role in promoting wellbeing and resilience.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Work with pupils on a one-to-one or small group basis to provide emotional and mental health support

  • Help students to develop strategies for managing anxiety, low mood, anger, and emotional regulation

  • Support with the implementation of behaviour and wellbeing plans

  • Collaborate with teachers, SEN staff, and external agencies to create a consistent support network

  • Promote a calm, safe, and nurturing environment for students to thrive

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with mental health or emotional needs (education, youth work, residential care, or counselling backgrounds are all relevant)

  • A trauma-informed and person-centred approach

  • Strong communication and active listening skills

  • Confidence in handling challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner

  • Knowledge of safeguarding and mental health frameworks in education

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
