EAL Learning Support Assistant – Primary Schools | Southwark

Do you have a knack for languages, a love of learning, and a big heart for helping children feel at home in the classroom?

We’re working with inclusive, welcoming primary schools across Lewisham looking for EAL Learning Support Assistants to support pupils whose first language isn’t English. You’ll help them find their voice, boost their confidence, and thrive in class—whether it’s their first week in the UK or they’re just building up their language skills.

What the role involves:

  • Supporting pupils with English as an additional language (1:1 or in small groups)

  • Helping with reading, writing, and speaking activities

  • Creating a calm, encouraging learning space

  • Working closely with class teachers, SENCOs, and families

We’d love to hear from you if:

  • You’ve worked with children or young people before (school, tutoring, mentoring or similar)

  • You’re patient, warm, and culturally aware

  • You’ve got strong spoken and written English

  • You’re ready to support pupils at different stages of language development

  • (Languages other than English are a bonus—but not essential!)

DBS Reminder:
You’ll need an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered on the Update Service. Don’t have one yet? No problem—we’ll walk you through it and help you apply.
