Behaviour Support Assistant – South Shields
Full-Time | Long-Term | September Start

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs? Do you have the resilience and empathy to support pupils who may display challenging behaviour?

Protocol Education is working closely with a welcoming and inclusive SEND school in South Shields that supports pupils aged 5–16 with SEMH needs, autism and associated learning difficulties. We are seeking a Behaviour Support Assistant to join their dedicated team and provide one-to-one and small group support both in and out of the classroom.

The Role:

  • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs to access learning in a safe and structured environment

  • De-escalating challenging behaviours using trauma-informed and restorative approaches

  • Helping pupils to develop social skills, emotional regulation, and positive relationships

  • Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff and other professionals to ensure consistent support

  • Contributing to behaviour plans, daily reports and team meetings

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience working with young people with challenging behaviour, SEMH, autism or trauma

  • A calm, patient and consistent approach to behaviour support

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

  • Able to build positive and trusting relationships with pupils

  • Relevant training (e.g. Team Teach, MAPA, or positive handling) is desirable but not essential

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
