Teaching Assistant – SEMH / Alternative Provision

Rate: £90–£110 per day

About the Role
We are recruiting a compassionate and proactive Teaching Assistant to support pupils within a specialist alternative education setting in South Shields. This provision supports children and young people who face social, emotional and behavioural challenges and require a more personalised approach to learning.
You will play a key role in helping pupils re-engage with education, develop confidence, and build positive relationships in a structured and supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities

Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs.

Support learning activities across a personalised curriculum.

Assist pupils with emotional regulation and behaviour strategies.

Build trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement.

Support teachers in creating a calm, inclusive learning environment.

Monitor and report on pupil progress and wellbeing.
Skills & Experience
-
Experience working with children or young people in education or care.

Knowledge of SEMH, behaviour support or trauma-informed practice is desirable.

Calm, patient and resilient approach.

Strong communication and teamwork skills.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
