Job Description

This role involves delivering high-quality physical education lessons specifically tailored for girls across a variety of age groups. The Teacher of Girls Physical Education plans, prepares, and delivers engaging and inclusive PE sessions that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and a positive attitude towards sport and health. The role requires maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment, assessing pupil progress, and contributing to the overall development of the physical education curriculum. The postholder collaborates with colleagues to promote extra-curricular activities and supports the school’s wider educational objectives.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver comprehensive physical education lessons designed to engage and motivate girls of varying abilities and ages.
  • Develop schemes of work and lesson plans in line with the school’s curriculum and national guidelines.
  • Assess, record, and report on pupils’ progress and attainment in physical education.
  • Promote positive behaviour and ensure a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment.
  • Encourage participation in extra-curricular sports and physical activities, including organising and supporting school sporting events and competitions.
  • Maintain appropriate resources and equipment, ensuring health and safety standards are met at all times.
  • Support the pastoral care and personal development of pupils through physical education.
  • Engage in professional development activities to keep abreast of current educational practises and PE teaching methodologies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and external organisations to enhance the physical education provision.

Required Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status or equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Physical Education, Sport Science, or a related discipline.

Education

  • A good honours degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, or a closely related subject.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development in physical education or teaching practise.

Experience

  • Previous experience teaching physical education to girls in a school setting is essential.
  • Experience planning and delivering lessons to a range of age groups and abilities.
  • Involvement in organising or supporting extra-curricular sporting activities is desirable.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of the national curriculum for physical education and current best practise in PE teaching.
  • Strong classroom management and behaviour management skills.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and engage pupils, fostering a positive attitude towards physical activity.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Competence in the use of educational technology and assessment tools relevant to PE.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional coaching qualifications or sports leadership awards.
  • Experience working within a single-sex educational environment.
  • First aid qualification.
  • Knowledge of current health and safety legislation relating to physical education.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time temporary position based within a school environment in Darlington.
