SEN Teacher (Secondary) – Full Time

Location: Sunderland
Contract: Full-time, permanent (term-time)
Start date: Immediate

About the role
We are looking for an innovative and compassionate SEN Teacher to work in a specialist secondary school for young people aged 11-19 with autism spectrum condition (ASC), communication and interaction needs, and learning or behavioural challenges. This is a role where ambition meets care — helping students build independence, resilience and achieve their best.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver a broad, differentiated curriculum accessible to pupils with complex needs.

  • Lead classroom teams, coordinate with teaching assistants and specialist staff to maximise student progress and engagement.

  • Promote emotional wellbeing, social skills and readiness for adult life, using strategies suited to the pupils’ needs.

  • Participate in the monitoring, evaluation and adaptation of individual learning plans.

  • Maintain high standards of safeguarding, ensure pupil dignity and nurture positive relationships across the school community.

We’re looking for

  • QTS or QTLS.

  • Experience working in a specialist or SEND secondary setting is highly desired — but enthusiasm, adaptability and commitment are key.

  • Strong communication skills, leadership potential and ability to inspire.

  • A creative and flexible approach to teaching, and the capacity to work in a dynamic environment.

What we offer

  • An opportunity to work where your teaching truly changes lives.

  • Specialist CPD and support to enhance your SEND expertise.

  • A strong team culture grounded in collaboration, kindness and high expectations.
