Job Description

This role involves providing effective support within a secondary school setting, assisting teaching staff in delivering lessons and supporting pupils, particularly those with special educational needs. The postholder works closely with teachers to enhance the learning experience and promote positive behaviour and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support teachers in the preparation and delivery of lessons to meet the diverse needs of pupils.
  • Assist pupils with their learning activities, providing individual or small group support.
  • Adapt learning materials and resources under guidance to ensure accessibility for pupils with special educational needs.
  • Encourage and promote positive behaviour and social development in line with school policies.
  • Supervise pupils during classroom activities and break times as required.
  • Support the inclusion of pupils with special educational needs in mainstream activities.
  • Monitor and record pupils’ progress and report observations to teaching staff.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly and supportive learning environment.
  • Attend relevant meetings and training sessions to enhance professional development.
  • Collaborate with other staff to support the overall welfare and development of pupils.

Required Qualifications

  • Good general education, including GCSEs or equivalent in English and Mathematics.
  • Experience working within an educational setting, preferably in a secondary school.
  • Basic understanding of special educational needs and inclusive teaching practises.

Education and Experience

  • Previous experience supporting pupils with additional learning needs is desirable.
  • Experience working with teenagers in an educational or similar environment.
  • Familiarity with classroom management techniques and behaviour support strategies.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written, to liaise effectively with pupils and staff.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision, as well as independently when required.
  • Patience, empathy and understanding of the needs of young people, particularly those with learning difficulties.
  • Organisational skills to manage resources and support classroom activities efficiently.
  • Basic IT skills to support learning activities and maintain records.
  • Awareness of safeguarding and child protection policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous qualifications or training related to special educational needs support.
  • First aid training or willingness to undertake such training.
  • Experience using specialised learning resources or assistive technology.

Working Conditions

  • The role is based within a secondary school environment, working predominantly in classrooms and communal areas.
  • The position requires full-time hours, typically aligned with the school day, including some flexibility for meetings or training.
  • The role may involve physical activities such as assisting pupils with mobility or moving learning materials.
  • The postholder is expected to adhere to all relevant school policies, including health and safety and safeguarding procedures.
  • The working environment can be lively and fast-paced, requiring resilience and adaptability.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
