If you’re someone who instinctively checks in on others, notices when a pupil is having an off day and knows how to offer calm reassurance, this role could be a brilliant fit.
We’re supporting a fantastic SEN school in Durham that’s looking for a Pastoral Support Assistant to join their team. The school supports children and young people with a range of additional needs, and they pride themselves on creating a safe, nurturing environment where every pupil feels understood.
What you’ll be doing
-
Offering daily emotional and pastoral support to pupils who need a bit of extra care
-
Helping young people regulate their emotions and navigate challenging moments
-
Supporting pupils during transitions, social time and busy parts of the school day
-
Working closely with the pastoral and SEN teams to keep strategies consistent
-
Building steady, trusting relationships with pupils who rely on calm, reassuring adults
-
Encouraging confidence, independence and positive communication
-
Keeping clear notes and communicating concerns effectively with staff
What the school is looking for
-
A kind, patient and steady person who genuinely wants to support young people
-
Someone who stays calm under pressure and can read situations sensitively
-
A good communicator who builds rapport naturally
-
Experience in pastoral care, mentoring, youth work, care or SEN is helpful but not essential
-
A team player who’s flexible, proactive and ready to learn
If you’ve worked in emotional support roles before, great. If you haven’t but you’ve got the heart and mindset for it, they’ll give you the guidance you need.
