We’re working with a large, inclusive secondary school in west Newcastle that places pastoral care, wellbeing, and inclusion at the heart of everything it does.

The school supports a diverse student population, including pupils with SEMH, SEND, and additional pastoral needs, and has a strong reputation for clear behaviour systems, restorative practice, and consistent staff support.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives on building relationships, supporting regulation, and helping young people stay engaged in education.

Secondary School | Newcastle upon Tyne
£110–£130 per day | PAYE | Depending on experience

About the school

  • Part of a well-established and respected local trust
  • Strong emphasis on student wellbeing, inclusion, and safeguarding
  • Experienced pastoral and SEN teams who work collaboratively
  • Clear structures and routines that support both staff and students
  • Easily accessible via local bus routes and close to major road links across Newcastle and surrounding areas

The role

As a Pastoral Mentor, you will:

  • Provide targeted pastoral and emotional support to pupils who need additional guidance to remain engaged in school
  • Support students with SEMH needs, including emotional regulation, behaviour management, and resilience building
  • Act as a trusted adult for pupils during challenging moments, transitions, and periods of dysregulation
  • Deliver 1:1 and small-group interventions focused on wellbeing, behaviour, and personal development
  • Work closely with pastoral leads, SENCOs, teachers, and external agencies where appropriate
  • Help maintain a calm, consistent, and supportive school environment

This role goes beyond classroom support and is ideal for someone who enjoys relational work, early intervention, and preventative pastoral support.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural, or emotional needs
  • Comes from a background in education, youth work, mentoring, care, psychology, or similar
  • Is calm, consistent, and confident in de-escalation and relationship-based approaches
  • Understands that behaviour is communication
  • Is committed to safeguarding and long-term impact
  • Is happy to work PAYE, with clear and transparent pay

School-based experience is beneficial but not essential – the right mindset and relational skills are key.

Pay & contract

  • £110–£130 per day, depending on experience
  • Weekly PAYE pay – no umbrella companies, no hidden deductions
  • Full-time, long-term opportunity with potential for continuity
