This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated and committed individual to join an OUTSTANDING school as a Learning Support Assistant and Emotional Support Mentor.

The successful candidate will play an active role in supporting teaching staff to deliver their curriculum so that all students can access the teaching and learning in the classroom. For the right candidate, this is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference to the lives of our students. 

The school is a highly over-subscribed 11 to 19 mixed comprehensive secondary school and sixth form situated in Sutton, South West London. There are currently 1900 students on roll, with over 200 staff providing teaching, pastoral care and other support across the school.

The normal working hours will be 33.25 hours per week, however flexibility and the ability to work outside of the normal working hours is required. Typically, the working pattern will be: 3 days a week: 08:15am – 15:00pm 2 days a week: 08:15am – 16:00pm.

• Supervising and supporting students in lessons, ensuring their safety and access to learning;

• Scaffolding learning for pupils when they may not understand tasks in lessons;

• Running homework clubs after school twice a week for the designated year group;

• Running social clubs twice a week at lunch times;

• Training as an ELSA mentor and being deployed to mentor up to two pupils in a 1:1 setting;

• Establishing good relationships with students, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs;

• Promoting the inclusion and acceptance of all students;

• Understanding and having the ability to counteract any barriers to students’ learning, whether it be due to a diagnosed difficulty such as a Speech and Language impairment, physical impairment, ASD or ADHD, or because the students’ require learning to be differentiated for them;

• Encouraging students to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher;

• Encouraging students to act independently, as appropriate;

• Supporting students to understand instructions;

• Supporting students in respect of local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, as directed by the teacher;

• Preparing for lessons through regular communication with class teachers;

• Being aware of student problems/progress/achievement and reporting to the teacher, as agreed;

• Undertaking student record-keeping, as requested;

• Supporting the teacher in managing student behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate;

• Gathering and reporting information to teachers;

• Assisting with admin support e.g. collecting and distributing resources etc.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
