Teaching Assistant – Alternative Education / Behaviour Support

Are you passionate about supporting young people who struggle in mainstream education? We are seeking enthusiastic Teaching Assistants to join a specialist alternative education setting in Durham. This environment supports pupils aged 4–19 who require tailored learning programmes and nurturing behavioural support. The provision focuses heavily on personal development, confidence building and preparing pupils for successful next steps.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils’ academic, social and emotional development.

  • Deliver targeted interventions and scaffold learning in small groups or 1:1.

  • Assist with behaviour management strategies and personalised learning plans.

  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff and external agencies.

  • Promote a calm, safe and inclusive environment for all pupils.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with children/young people in a school or alternative provision.

  • Understanding of SEMH (Social, Emotional, Mental Health) needs or behaviour support.

  • Positive, patient and empathetic communication style.

  • Ability to adapt approaches to differing pupil needs.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
