Behavioural Support Assistant

Location: Gateshead
Contract: Full-time, Long-term
Start Date: Immediate

Do you have a calm, confident approach and a knack for helping pupils find their focus?

We’re looking for a Behavioural Support Assistant to join a supportive SEND provision in the Gateshead area. This role is all about building trust, creating structure, and helping young people navigate challenges so they can re-engage with learning and succeed.

You’ll be part of a passionate, close-knit team who understand that behaviour is communication — and that with the right support, every child can thrive. No two days are the same, but every day you’ll make a difference.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Supporting pupils with social, emotional, and behavioural needs (SEMH) across primary and secondary settings

  • Building strong, positive relationships through consistency and encouragement

  • Assisting in developing and maintaining clear routines and calm learning environments

  • Working closely with teachers, mentors, and pastoral staff to deliver tailored behaviour strategies

  • Providing 1:1 or small group support to help pupils regulate emotions and develop confidence

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience working with children or young people who display challenging behaviour (education, youth work, or care background)

  • A calm, patient, and empathetic manner

  • Ability to de-escalate situations and model positive behaviour

  • Resilience, reliability, and a genuine passion for helping young people succeed

  • Training or awareness in SEMH, Team Teach, or similar approaches (bonus points if you’re Thrive-trained – if not, we’ll provide this for free!)

Why join Protocol Education?

  • Weekly pay through PAYE – no umbrella companies

  • Free Thrive and CPD training

  • Personalised support from a specialist SEND consultant

  • Access to long-term and permanent opportunities in local schools

If you believe in second chances, positive relationships, and the power of patience, this could be the perfect next step for you.
