A special school in Durham is looking for a Behaviour Support Assistant who can offer calm, consistent support to pupils who may find parts of the school day challenging. The school provides a nurturing, structured environment for young people with a range of additional needs, and they’re hoping to welcome someone who can help pupils feel safe, understood, and ready to learn.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building positive relationships and can respond with patience and empathy when situations become more difficult. You’ll be part of a team who work closely together, creating strategies and routines that give pupils confidence and stability.

What you’ll be doing as a Behaviour Support Assistant 

  • Supporting pupils one-to-one or in small groups throughout lessons and transitions.

  • Using clear, consistent approaches to help pupils manage behaviour and regulate emotions.

  • Offering reassurance and positive guidance during challenging moments.

  • Working alongside teachers and pastoral staff to follow behaviour and support plans.

  • Encouraging communication, independence, and a positive attitude towards learning.

Requirements 

  • Someone calm, reliable, and comfortable building trust with young people.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to stay composed under pressure.

  • A caring approach with a willingness to follow guidance and work as part of a team.

  • Experience with behaviour support or SEND is helpful but not essential, as training will be provided.
