A specialist school in Gateshead is looking for an Autism Support Assistant who can offer calm, consistent support to pupils who learn and communicate in different ways. You’ll be joining a welcoming team that works closely together to create an environment where every pupil feels understood, safe, and able to make progress in their own time.

This role suits someone who is patient, observant, and comfortable working at a steady pace. Experience working with autistic children or young people is certainly appreciated, but it is not essential. If you bring the right attitude and a willingness to learn, the school will guide you through the approaches that work best for each pupil.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting pupils during lessons, routines, and personalised activities.

  • Encouraging communication, independence, and confidence through consistent guidance.

  • Helping to adapt tasks and learning opportunities to suit individual needs and sensory preferences.

  • Working closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to follow structured plans.

What the school is hoping for

  • Someone calm, patient, and genuinely interested in supporting autistic pupils.

  • A good listener who notices small changes and responds with care.

  • Strong communication skills and the willingness to follow guidance from the wider team.

  • Experience is helpful but not essential, as training and support are provided.
