Job Duties:

  • Provide one-to-one support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in an educational setting
  • Assist students in accessing the curriculum and participating in classroom activities
  • Implement individualised support plans and strategies as directed by the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) or relevant professionals
  • Support students in developing social skills and promoting positive behaviour
  • Ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for students with ASD
  • Collaborate with teachers and other professionals to facilitate effective communication and integration of support
  • Monitor and track progress of students with ASD, providing feedback to the SENCO and relevant professionals
  • Assist with the implementation of assistive technology and specialised resources to support students with ASD
  • Support students during transitions between activities and locations within the school
  • Attend training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in supporting students with ASD

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in an educational or similar setting
  • A patient and empathetic approach when working with students with ASD
  • Good understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with ASD and strategies for supporting their learning and development
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with students, teachers, and other professionals
  • The ability to follow instructions and implement individualised support plans
  • Strong organisational skills to manage workload and prioritise tasks
  • A valid enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check

 

Education:

A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional relevant qualifications, such as a Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or equivalent, would be advantageous.

 

Experience:

Prior experience working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in an educational or similar setting is essential. Experience in implementing individualised support plans and using assistive technology is desirable.

 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Sound knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its impact on learning and development
  • Familiarity with different strategies and interventions for supporting students with ASD
  • Ability to adapt and modify learning materials and resources to meet individual needs
  • Proficiency in using assistive technology and specialised resources for students with ASD
  • Strong observation and assessment skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding policies

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or equivalent
  • Additional training or qualifications in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) support
  • First Aid certification

 

Working Conditions:

The 121 ASD Support Assistant will primarily work within an educational setting, providing support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The role may involve working in classrooms, resource rooms, or other designated areas within the school. The assistant may also accompany students during outdoor activities or field trips. The work schedule is expected to be full-time, following the school's timetable. This is a temporary position, subject to the needs of the school and the student(s) requiring support.
