A school in Gateshead is looking for a supportive and reliable 1:1 SEMH Assistant to work closely with a pupil who needs a steady, understanding adult by their side for an immediate start. If you’re someone who stays calm under pressure and builds trust quickly, this could be a brilliant match.

About the role

You’ll be working directly with one pupil who finds the school day a little tougher to navigate. Your role is to help them settle, feel safe, and take part in learning at a pace that works for them.

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Build a positive, consistent relationship with the pupil

  • Support them through lessons, transitions, and social times

  • Use agreed strategies to help them manage emotions and behaviour

  • Encourage small steps forward in confidence, communication, and self-regulation

  • Step in with de-escalation when needed, always with empathy

  • Work closely with teachers, the SENCO, and the pastoral team

It’s a role where patience, kindness, and good humour go a long way.

What the school offers

  • A caring team who understand the realities of SEMH support

  • Clear guidance and strong pastoral systems

  • A safe, structured environment where staff work together

  • Opportunities to develop through training and in-school support

What we’re looking for

  • Experience supporting young people, ideally with SEMH needs

  • A calm, steady approach in challenging moments

  • Confidence using behaviour strategies

  • Someone who’s resilient, positive, and genuinely wants to help
