A welcoming and forward-thinking specialist school in Durham is looking for a dedicated 1:1 SEMH Behaviour Assistant to support a pupil with significant social, emotional and mental health needs.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is calm, resilient and passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning.


The Role

You will work on a one-to-one basis with a student who requires consistent emotional support, firm boundaries and personalised behaviour strategies. Your role will involve:

  • Supporting the pupil to regulate emotions and manage challenging behaviour

  • Using de-escalation techniques and a trauma-informed approach

  • Encouraging engagement in learning through patience, praise and structure

  • Building a trusting, stable relationship with the young person

  • Assisting the class teacher with tailored learning activities

  • Monitoring behaviour triggers and contributing to behaviour plans

  • Promoting a safe, positive and inclusive environment at all times


About the Student

The pupil may experience:

  • High levels of anxiety

  • Difficulty with social situations and classroom expectations

  • Low self-esteem or confidence

  • Outbursts or withdrawal depending on the day

  • A need for consistent routines and supportive adults

Your role is to provide stability, encouragement and a sense of safety that enables them to stay in class, access learning and build coping strategies.


What We’re Looking For

  • Experience supporting children or young people with behaviour or SEMH needs

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • A calm, nurturing and consistent approach

  • Confidence in de-escalation and positive behaviour support

  • The resilience to manage challenging behaviour professionally and safely

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil welfare

  • A DBS on the update service or willingness to apply

Backgrounds in support work, youth work, mentoring, care, sports coaching or similar roles are highly valued.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
