Not every classroom sounds the same.
Not every success looks obvious.
And that’s exactly why this role matters.

We’re supporting a specialist secondary school in Durham that works with young people with complex needs, including autism and severe to profound learning difficulties. They’re looking for a teacher who understands that connection comes before curriculum, and that consistency, patience, and care make the biggest difference.

This is a school where pupils are known as individuals, staff support each other properly, and progress is measured in confidence, communication, and trust as much as outcomes.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Teaching small groups of secondary-aged pupils with a range of complex learning needs

  • Adapting learning to suit communication styles, sensory needs, and individual EHCP targets

  • Working closely with teaching assistants, therapists, and pastoral staff

  • Creating a calm, structured environment where pupils feel safe and understood

  • Celebrating the small steps, because they’re never actually small

This role could be right for you if you:

  • Hold QTS, or have strong experience teaching in a SEND or specialist setting

  • Are confident supporting pupils with autism and severe or profound learning difficulties

  • Bring a calm, grounded approach to the classroom

  • Understand that behaviour is communication

  • Want to work somewhere that values people over paperwork

Why this school stands out:

  • Purpose-built specialist environment

  • Supportive leadership team who understand SEND realities

  • Strong teamwork, you’re never on your own

  • Space to teach creatively and responsively

  • A genuine sense of care for staff wellbeing

What Protocol Education offers:

  • Weekly pay through PAYE, no umbrella companies

  • Free access to our online CPD Academy

  • A dedicated SEND consultant who actually listens

  • Opportunities for long-term and permanent roles in specialist settings

  • Clear, honest support from registration to placement

If you’re Thrive trained, that’s a big bonus in settings like this. If not, we can support you with our free Thrive training to help you develop your SEND toolkit.

If this sounds like somewhere you’d feel at home, let’s talk. No pressure, no sales pitch, just a proper chat about whether it’s the right fit for you.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQs on the Protocol Education website for further details.
