“The communication is very efficient, and my questions are always addressed. My consultant helped me through the entire process and then found me a perfect job as close to my home as possible. Now I get to walk to work every day knowing I’m going to have a great day.”

How do I become a
primary school teacher?

You’ll need to complete a recognised teaching qualification, such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or a school-based training programme.

Our sister company Best Practice Network offer Initial Teacher Training programmes which will help you get into teaching. They also offer many other types of programmes and training that will make you classroom ready.

At Protocol Education, we also support graduates interested in teaching in primary schools through our ECT pool and Future Teachers Programme.

Frequently asked questions about working in primary schools

Can a secondary teacher teach primary?

Yes! Secondary teachers can absolutely move into primary teaching. If you already hold QTS, you’re qualified to teach at primary level, and with the right training and adaptability, many schools welcome the switch.

For those without QTS, you’ll need to complete a primary-focused teacher training route. Extra CPD in literacy, numeracy or early years can also help you feel classroom-ready. Gaining some hands‐on experience (volunteering, supply work, assistant roles) in primary settings to demonstrate readiness would also be useful.

What qualifications do I need to teach primary?

You’ll need Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), gained through a PGCE, School Direct, or another ITT route, such as this one from our sister company, Best Practice Network.

What is the average primary school teacher salary in the UK?

In the UK, primary teacher salaries can typically range from £30,000 to £41,000 depending on experience and location.
