To start your career, you’ll need the right nursery teacher qualifications, which usually include a degree in early childhood studies or a related subject, plus achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Some roles, such as nursery nurse, may require Level 2 or 3 childcare qualifications.
If you’re a graduate wanting to begin a teaching career, explore our Future teachers programme.
You’ll usually need a degree in early years or education plus QTS. For nursery nurse roles, vocational qualifications such as Level 3 in Childcare are often required.
Many nursery roles welcome beginners, but having a Level 2 or Level 3 Early Years qualification can boost your options. Some roles may also ask for GCSEs in English and Maths and a Paediatric First Aid certificate.
No qualifications yet? You can still start as a Nursery Assistant and train on the job.
Responsibilities include planning engaging activities, supporting social and emotional development, observing progress, and working closely with parents and carers.
Nursery nurse interview questions often cover safeguarding, supporting children’s development, behaviour management and teamwork.
