Job Description

This role involves providing dedicated pastoral support and academic tutoring to students within an educational setting. The successful candidate works closely with students to promote their well-being, personal development and academic progress. The role requires delivering one-to-one and group support, addressing barriers to learning, and liaising with teaching staff and external agencies where appropriate. The post holder contributes to creating a positive and inclusive learning environment and supports students in achieving their full potential.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored pastoral care and support to students, addressing emotional, social and behavioural needs.
  • Deliver academic tutoring sessions focusing on individual learning requirements and curriculum objectives.
  • Monitor and review student progress and well-being, maintaining accurate records and reporting as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff to identify and support students facing difficulties in learning or personal development.
  • Support the implementation of personalised learning plans and strategies to improve student engagement and achievement.
  • Facilitate group work and workshops aimed at developing students’ resilience, self-esteem and study skills.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, carers and external agencies to ensure a coordinated approach to student support.
  • Assist in managing behaviour within the learning environment in accordance with school policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to safeguarding procedures by identifying and reporting concerns in line with statutory requirements.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training and professional development activities relevant to the role.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant Level 3 qualification in Education, Childcare, Counselling, or a closely related field.
  • Formal training in safeguarding and child protection.

Education

  • Minimum of GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) including English and Mathematics.
  • Further education qualifications or certificates related to pastoral care or tutoring are highly desirable.

Experience

  • Proven experience working in a pastoral support or tutoring capacity within an educational or youth setting.
  • Experience of supporting young people with diverse needs, including behavioural, emotional or learning difficulties.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with teaching staff and external agencies.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of safeguarding legislation and best practises.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with young people, families and colleagues.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage caseloads effectively and maintain accurate records.
  • Empathy, patience and a non-judgemental approach to student support.
  • Basic knowledge of curriculum requirements relevant to the tutoring aspect of the role.
  • Proficiency in using standard office software and digital tools for record keeping and communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Level 2 or 3 qualification in Mental Health First Aid or Counselling.
  • Experience in supporting students with special educational needs and disabilities.
  • Additional teaching or tutoring qualifications.
  • Training in restorative practise or conflict resolution.

Working Conditions

  • The role is based within a school or educational establishment in County Durham, Stockton-on-Tees.
  • Full-time hours are expected, typically aligned with school term times but may include some flexibility.
  • Work involves direct contact with students, requiring adherence to safeguarding and health and safety policies.
  • The post holder may be required to attend meetings and training outside of core hours on occasion.
  • Work environment is generally office and classroom based, with some movement around the site.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
