Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to provide support to pupils with additional learning needs within an educational setting in Dartford. This role involves working closely with teaching staff to facilitate the inclusion and progress of pupils, ensuring they receive tailored support to meet their individual needs. The successful candidate demonstrates patience, understanding, and commitment to fostering a positive learning environment.

Job Duties

  • Support pupils with special educational needs during lessons and activities, adapting resources and approaches as necessary.
  • Assist in the implementation of individual education plans and behaviour management strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to prepare learning materials and classroom resources.
  • Observe and record pupil progress, reporting observations to teaching staff to inform planning.
  • Promote independence and social skills development among pupils with additional needs.
  • Support pupils during breaks and lunchtime, ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
  • Attend relevant training and meetings to maintain up-to-date knowledge of SEN best practises.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding policies at all times.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Education

  • Secondary education to GCSE standard (or equivalent) including English and mathematics.

Experience

  • Previous experience working with children in an educational or care setting, preferably supporting pupils with special educational needs.
  • Experience of applying behaviour management strategies effectively.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of various types of special educational needs and disabilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, staff, and parents.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Patience, empathy, and a nurturing approach towards children.
  • Basic IT skills to support record keeping and resource preparation.
  • Awareness of safeguarding procedures and child protection legislation.
  • Training in specific SEN areas such as autism spectrum disorders or speech and language difficulties.

Working Conditions

  • Based in a school environment within Dartford, Kent.
  • Full-time hours on a contract basis, working term-time in line with the school calendar.
  • May require some physical activity, including assisting pupils with mobility and personal care.
  • Requires flexibility and resilience to support a range of pupil needs throughout the school day.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
