What To Wear To School

20/04/15

Samantha has found in the past it can be tricky to decide what to wear to school. What about wearing leggings?

It is always a conundrum what to wear on a school day, sticking to sensible clothing or trying to be a bit more fashion forward without causing sideways glances and laughter from the students. Also where can we draw the line with leggings being popular are they appropriate for school use?  It is something I debate frequently in my mind most evening as I prepare my clothes for the next day, a habit I have acquired to stop myself being late in the mornings.  We have all been there with a mouthful of porridge; bowl in hand, one foot in a pair of trousers that no longer fit and a jumper that looks suspiciously like the one you owned age sixteen.

The first day at a new school regardless of the longevity of your stay can always be a stressful one outfit wise. What if the school all wear suits and I show up in a funky dress? What If I wear my suit and they think that am auditioning for the roll of head teacher or that I am ‘above my station.’ Nobody wants to be the new face in the staff room searching for the kettle with eyes on you that say ‘who is THAT’ Just because you decided on the bright green number in a hurry.

Any supply wants a school to like them and to ask them back again, with so much emphasis put on the students to look presentable and in perfect uniform at most schools it is no wonder we are concerned with it too.

I have developed a wardrobe of work wear items that keep me in between the lines of ‘trying to be too cool’ and ‘boring teacher.’ Anything put with a smart jacket, even jeans looks instantly smart and so I would suggest investing in the smart casual look. Teaching drama I have to run around, sit on the floor and generally completing active movement tasks so some days I look like a PE teacher and I am fine with this now that I am comfortable at the school. This is however not the way to do on day one.

I will now reveal to you my fail proof go to golden outfit for when I just don’t know what else to wear. Black super stretchy trousers, sometimes called treggings. Basically a cross between a legging and a trousers meaning they are thicker than the dreaded transparent legging but much more comfortable than trousers. These with a long shirt and boots with a smart jacket, keeps me looking young and trendy whilst being smart enough to impress. All whilst performing physical theatre!
