The Dish on Discounts

07/04/15

Amanda has been living in the UK for a little while now and has some great advice on saving money.

What is better than eating at new restaurants, sightseeing, and shopping while abroad? Saving money while doing it! In the UK, vouchers (coupons) are relatively easy to come by and can save you a lot of money.

If you have a restaurant in mind, simply Google the restaurant's name and then the word voucher.  More often than not (from my experience) a coupon will come up that you can use.  You can also use the website www.vouchercodes.co.uk to find them.  What is so great about vouchers here, is that almost all places allow you to simply show them the voucher on your phone, rather than having to print it out. You can easily save 30% on every meal by finding the restaurant's voucher.

Vouchers are not only useful for when you go out.  Using the above website, you can receive codes for money off grocery orders when you order your groceries online.  You usually have to spend some to use it (i.e £15 off any order over £60), but if you and your roommates are shopping together that wouldn't be a problem!  You can also get vouchers for furniture delivery from stores like Argos if you need furniture for your flat. I suggest searching every restaurant/store you go to.

Vouchers are not the only way you can save money.  Sightseeing is something everyone wants to do when they arrive, but it can get very expensive.  What I did was look at itineraries for bus tours to the major attractions (Big Ben, Westminster Abby, The London Eye, Buckingham Palace etc), and looked at the route that it took.  There were some places on the tour that my roommates and I had no interest in going to, so we mapped out our own tour and did it ourselves.  No we didn't get the hear the history of all the buildings as we saw them, but we did save £27 each!

Simply try and research where you want to go before you go.  It may take some time, but it could pay off! Who knows, maybe you'll become the next extreme couponer of the UK!

Don't forget that Protocol Education can offer you travel discounts as well as discounts with Pearson Education books. Contact Megan for more information and the promocodes.
