Summer Term and the Exam Season

29/03/17

There are countless tips for preparing pupils for the rigours of the summer examinations, but what about the hard working teachers? Not so much. Fortunately, Protocol Education has you covered with a few tips to help you through to the end of the year.

The summer term can be a bit of an odd one in secondary schools. The last minute cramming and revision sessions, the stress of the exams themselves and then the hole left by the disappearance of the Year 11s at the end of the year. A few tips on how to achieve some balance.

Celebrate Regular Milestones

The end of term can seem a long way off sometimes, don't wait until then to reward yourself. If you are teaching exam classes you are about to face a frantic last few weeks featuring lessons, revision sessions, and quite a bit of marking. It can seem as you are running into a something of a wall. One way to cope is to keep ticking off the dates, final lesson taught – check, final revision session – check, final exam date – double check! You can have a mini-celebration after the first two and a medium sized celebration after the third, you’ve earned it! The end of the exams is not the end, but it is perhaps the end of the beginning.

Use the extra daylight

Although you can’t depend on the weather during summer in England you can set your watch by the length of the days, and in fact, you really should. These long days are fantastic so try to make the most of them. Perhaps you can occasionally to get up at 5.30 and to go for a morning walk, run or cycle. It will do wonders to dispel exam related stress and you will feel great at school afterwards (but may nod off in the staff room at around half four).

Get your holidays booked!

You have to have something to look forward to at the end of the year and also have a few little things to look forward to throughout the term to mitigate the hectic exam season. So get yourself booked on a nice break for the summer and make sure you keep an eye on your social life, finding time for friends is hugely important.

If you need to book a holiday this summer Protocol Education can help! We have access to some very generous discounts with a number of great travel companies, contact teacherservices@protocol-education.com for details.
