5 Daily Survival Tips for TA's

11/07/16

The nature of daily supply often means you have to make an educated guess as to what will be expected of you that day, especially if it's a school you've never visited before! Emma breaks the essentials down into her top 5 tips to make your day as stress free as possible.

Let’s face it, going into a new school is pretty daunting, particularly when doing ‘day to day’ work. No two schools are the same and when one is like working in a sanctuary, another could be sending you running for the hills. It can be stressful enough just getting to the school, let alone the day there itself.

So here are 5 daily survival tips to help you through the day:

1. Always have lunch prepared! If you’re doing ‘day to day’, you can never guarantee that you’ll be able to go out and find somewhere to have lunch or that you’ll even get a decent amount of time for a break. Some staff areas are pretty bleak as well so always take your own cutlery etc.
2. Check your own route to the school. Even if you’ve been given directions, it would be worth the extra 5 minutes to get a solid bearing of where you are going. I’ve had some dodgy directions in the past, so it’s best, even in a rush, to take time to find a solid route!
3. Pack a bag the night before. I was always rubbish at doing this, but it makes life much easier if you get a phone call first thing and you’ve got to dash.
4. Wear a watch! You may be sent to a room to laminate every piece of work known to man where you’ll lose all concept of time.
5. Get a rough timetable for the day. You’ll find that breaking the day up into chunks (as little time markers) helps the day go a lot quicker when you’ve got something to aim for.

If it’s been a bad day (the kind where it feels like it’ll never end and you’re miffed because the naughty kid in class kicked you in the shin) then take 5 minutes when you’re home to just breathe. Have a stretch, put on some music, maybe dance around a bit and expel all the tension. Tomorrow is new day and a fresh start…
