SEN School Teaching Assistant

Teaching Assistant | SEMH & Behaviour | Gateshead | Full Time | September Start

Are you confident, charismatic and passionate about supporting young people?

Protocol Education is working with a specialist secondary school in Gateshead to recruit an enthusiastic and personable Teaching Assistant to join their team from September.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is naturally confident, approachable and able to build strong relationships with young people. The school is not necessarily looking for the most experienced Teaching Assistant — they are looking for someone with the right personality, attitude and willingness to get involved.

The school provides a calm, structured and relationship-focused environment for students who may have experienced challenges within mainstream education. Staff work hard to create positive relationships while maintaining clear boundaries and high expectations.

Role Details

  • Full-time
  • September 2026 start
  • Monday-Friday
  • 8:30am-4:30pm
  • Term-time only
  • Long-term opportunity with potential for permanent employment

What will you be doing?

  • Supporting students across KS3 and KS4
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with young people
  • Providing in-class learning support
  • Working 1:1 and with small groups
  • Helping students remain focused and engaged
  • Supporting literacy, reading, spelling and written communication
  • Providing encouragement and positive role modelling
  • Supporting students during breakfast club and lunchtime
  • Taking part in social activities with students
  • Supporting the wider pastoral and behaviour team

The school places a huge emphasis on relationships, so you will be expected to actively engage with students rather than simply supervise from the sidelines.

What kind of person are they looking for?

You could be an experienced Teaching Assistant, youth worker, sports coach, graduate or someone with transferable experience working with young people.

Most importantly, you will be:

  • Charismatic and approachable
  • Confident and proactive
  • Warm and engaging
  • Comfortable working with challenging behaviour
  • Positive and enthusiastic
  • Able to establish boundaries
  • Keen to become part of the wider school community

Why Protocol Education?

  • Competitive daily pay
  • Weekly PAYE pay
  • FREE CPD and training
  • Dedicated education consultant
  • Long-term and permanent opportunities
  • £50 Refer a Friend bonus

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQs on the Protocol Education website for further details.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.

Protocol Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with the DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’, this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
