Secondary School Teaching Assistant

Looking to be the extra pair of hands that keeps a secondary classroom running smoothly?

We’re partnering with a number of well-led secondary schools across South Tyneside who are searching for reliable and enthusiastic classroom support staff. If you enjoy helping young people navigate those important teenage years, this could be the perfect opportunity.

In this role, you’ll work with students across KS3 and KS4, supporting their learning, confidence, and organisation in lessons. You’ll collaborate closely with subject teachers, step in where needed, and provide the consistent support that helps pupils stay focused and engaged.

What the role involves:

  • Supporting learning across a range of subjects, from maths to humanities

  • Leading small-group intervention sessions

  • Providing 1:1 guidance for students who need additional support

  • Reinforcing positive behaviour and clear classroom expectations

  • Encouraging independence and building students’ confidence

Schools in South Tyneside are keen to welcome individuals who are calm, adaptable, and genuinely motivated to help pupils succeed. You don’t need to be a qualified teacher, but confidence, resilience, and the ability to connect with teenagers are essential.

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Have experience working with young people, in education or similar settings

  • Feel comfortable supporting students aged 11–16

  • Build positive relationships quickly

  • Stay organised and composed in a busy classroom

  • Take safeguarding and student wellbeing seriously

Experience supporting pupils with SEND, SEMH, ADHD, or autism is highly valued. Backgrounds in mentoring, youth work, sports coaching, residential care, or alternative provision also transfer brilliantly into this type of role.

Build your confidence with FREE CPD

Our CPD Academy provides practical training designed for classroom support roles. From behaviour management strategies to understanding EHCPs and SEND legislation, the courses help you strengthen your skills and make a positive impact from day one.

Why work with Protocol Education?
