Job Description

The Teacher of Humanities delivers high-quality teaching and learning within the humanities curriculum, contributing to the academic development and personal growth of learners. This role involves planning, preparing and delivering effective lessons, assessing and monitoring student progress, and fostering an inclusive and stimulating learning environment. The post holder supports the wider objectives of the educational institution, including curriculum development, student welfare, and extracurricular activities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons in humanities subjects, including history, geography, and religious studies, in line with the curriculum and examination requirements.
  • Assess and monitor student progress through marking, feedback, and formal assessments, providing constructive guidance to support learning and development.
  • Create and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages respect, participation, and high standards of behaviour.
  • Adapt teaching methods and resources to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of students.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and departmental planning to ensure the relevance and effectiveness of the humanities programme.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, achievement, and behaviour in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Engage in professional development activities to enhance subject knowledge and teaching skills.
  • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding student progress and welfare.
  • Participate in school-wide activities, including staff meetings, training days, and extracurricular events as required.
  • Support safeguarding and promote equality, diversity, and inclusion within the learning environment.

Required Qualifications

  • A recognised teaching qualification suitable for the education sector, such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or equivalent.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in a humanities-related subject, for example history, geography, or religious studies.

Education

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant humanities discipline.
  • Completion of teacher training accredited by an appropriate educational body.

Experience

  • Previous experience teaching humanities subjects within a secondary school or further education setting is preferred.
  • Demonstrable experience of effective lesson planning, classroom management, and assessment.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong subject knowledge in humanities disciplines and familiarity with the national curriculum and examination specifications.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Ability to differentiate teaching approaches to accommodate learners with a range of abilities and backgrounds.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively.
  • Competent in the use of educational technology and digital resources to enhance learning.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and reflective practise.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience of teaching humanities to examination level, including GCSE and A Level.
  • Additional qualifications or training in special educational needs or behaviour management.
  • Experience working within multi-disciplinary teams or collaborative educational projects.

Working Conditions

  • The role is based within an educational institution located in Yorkshire and the Humber, North Yorkshire, or Middlesbrough.
  • Full-time contract with working hours aligned to the academic timetable, including some evenings or occasional weekends for events or meetings.
  • Work involves classroom teaching, preparation, assessment, and participation in school activities.
  • The role may require standing for extended periods and occasional light physical activity related to classroom set-up.
  • The post holder is expected to comply with all safeguarding policies and health and safety regulations.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
