Primary SEN Support Special Needs

Do you have a calm, caring approach and a real passion for supporting children with additional needs?

A primary school in Fenham is looking for a SEND Teaching Assistant to work within their ARP (Additionally Resourced Provision) from September, supporting pupils with a range of needs including autism, communication difficulties, and social, emotional and mental health needs.

This is a hands-on, rewarding role where no two days look the same, but every day makes a difference.

The Role

As a SEND Teaching Assistant in the ARP, you will:

  • Support pupils in the ARP setting, both 1:1 and in small groups
  • Help pupils access learning through tailored support and adapted resources
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies
  • Work closely with teachers, the SENDCO and wider support staff
  • Encourage independence, confidence, and communication skills
  • Support with routines, transitions, and sensory needs
  • Help create a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Experienced working with children with SEND (school-based experience preferred)
  • Confident supporting pupils with autism and additional needs
  • Patient, reliable, and emotionally resilient
  • A strong team player with great communication skills
  • Passionate about inclusion and helping every child thrive

Relevant qualifications (CACHE, Level 2/3 Supporting Teaching & Learning etc.) are desirable but not essential if you have strong experience.

What is an ARP? (Additionally Resourced Provision)

An ARP (Additionally Resourced Provision) is a specialist provision within a mainstream school, designed to support pupils with additional needs who may require more structured or targeted support than can usually be provided in a standard classroom setting.

Pupils in an ARP are still part of the wider school community, but they may access learning through a more personalised approach, which can include:

Smaller group teaching

  • Individual support plans
  • Communication and sensory support
  • Structured routines and targeted interventions
  • Support with emotional regulation and social development

The aim of an ARP is to help pupils thrive academically and emotionally, while also encouraging inclusion and access to mainstream learning wherever appropriate.
