Primary SEN Support Learning Support Assistant

Do you have experience supporting anyone with Special Educational Needs (SEN), or are you passionate about making a real difference in the lives of pupils who need extra support?

Protocol Education is currently working with a number of supportive primary schools across Gateshead who are looking for caring and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistants to join their classrooms.

These roles involve supporting pupils with additional learning needs, helping them feel safe, confident, and ready to learn each day.

Working hours are typically 8.30am to 3.30pm, term time only.

Why Work in SEN Support?

Supporting children with additional needs can be one of the most rewarding roles in education. Every small breakthrough matters, and your support can have a lasting impact on a child’s confidence and progress.

In this role, you will help pupils:

• Feel supported and understood in the classroom
• Develop confidence and independence
• Stay engaged in learning activities
• Build positive relationships with peers and staff

Many people working in SEN roles go on to careers in teaching, educational psychology, therapy, or pastoral support.

Why Supply Work Works So Well

Working through Protocol Education allows you to gain experience while keeping flexibility.

You can:

Choose the days you want to work
• Build experience in different school settings
• Develop valuable SEN support skills
• Maintain a healthy work-life balance

You’ll also benefit from the school holiday schedule, giving you time to recharge between terms.

A Pathway Into Long-Term Roles

Many schools prefer to recruit staff they have already worked with through supply.

This means supply work can often lead to:

Long-term SEN Teaching Assistant roles
Permanent positions within schools
• Strong professional relationships and references

It’s a great way to find a school where you feel genuinely valued.

What Your Day Could Look Like

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you may:

• Support pupils on a 1:1 basis or in small groups
• Help children stay focused and engaged in lessons
• Encourage positive behaviour and emotional regulation
• Work closely with the class teacher and SEND team
• Adapt learning activities to support individual needs

Your presence in the classroom can make a huge difference to a child’s learning experience.

What We’re Looking For

We welcome applicants who:

• Have experience supporting children with SEN, SEND, or SEMH needs
• Are patient, resilient, and compassionate
• Have strong communication and teamwork skills
• Are passionate about helping children succeed

Graduates in Psychology, Education, Health & Social Care, or related fields are also encouraged to apply.

• Flexible work that fits around your availability
• Opportunities across Gateshead primary schools
• Free access to professional CPD training
• Ongoing support from a dedicated consultant
• Opportunities to move into long-term or permanent roles
