We’re working with a specialist provision in Newcastle looking for a confident SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. This is a full-time, long-term role where every day genuinely matters.
If you’ve worked in SEMH, alternative provision, PRU, youth work or behaviour support, you’ll feel right at home here.
Supporting pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs on a 1:1 and small group basis
Helping students regulate emotions and stay engaged in learning
Working closely with teachers, SENCO and pastoral teams
Using de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour support
Creating a safe, structured and encouraging learning environment
This isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about being the steady one.

Strong leadership team and clear behaviour policies
Trauma-informed approach
Staff who genuinely support each other
Focus on consistency, routine and relationship-building
You won’t be left to “just get on with it”. Support is built in.
Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEND or challenging behaviour
Background in education, youth work, care, sports coaching or similar
Calm, resilient and confident personality
Strong behaviour management skills
Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willing to apply
Team Teach or de-escalation training is a bonus, but not essential.
