Working with young people can be a rewarding but challenging experience and requires patience, adaptability and a can-do attitude.

The role of a SEMH TA/ Support Assistant is to remove the barriers impacting a young person's ability to access the curriculum, engage in learning and enable them to reach their full potential. We are supporting a school in Durham who are looking for an experience teaching assistant who has experience of working with children with challenging behaviour and SEMH.

Experience working with young people is essential for this role due to the complex needs of the student. The ideal candidate will be someone who is firm but fair and has a nurturing nature. You will need to have worked with SEN children before and have strategies in place to support the child when they may go into crisis. Team teach training would be great for this role, due to the de-escalation training element.

A motivation to work with and improve outcomes for young people is essential.

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will:
-Build and maintain successful relationships with learners
-Support a named pupil or a group of students in traditional and non-traditional learning environments.
-Deliver activities aimed at engaging pupils in learning / improving behaviour
-Challenge and motivate pupils, promote and reinforce self-esteem.
-Implement behaviour management strategies
-Work with young people at risk of exclusion / excluded from mainstream education
-Offer a supportive approach in a role-modelling/mentoring capacity
-To record observations on young people's behaviour and progress

We would be really interested to also hear from candidates who have experience working in challenging settings such as the emergency services, armed forces, prisons and probationary work.
