Secondary Autism Support Teaching Assistant based in a Special Needs Education Unit

Time: 8:45am to 15:30pm

We are currently working with Special Needs Secondary Unit based in Barnet, located close to Brent Cross Underground station. They are currently seeking a full-time Secondary level Teaching Assistant to support their Key stage 3 and Key stage 4 students with Autism.

About the school:
We are working with a good SEN Unit within a mainstream school in Barnet for secondary school students with Severe and Profound Learning Disabilities (including Autism). All students have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) or are admitted to an assessment basis.
The school currently have over 80 pupils across eleven class groups. Each class team has 3 or 4 Learning Support Assistants (LSA) and led by a classroom teacher. The classes are split into learning zones. One learning zone caters for students with Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD), another zone has four classes for pupils with Autism (ASC) and another zone has classes to support students with Profound Multiple Learning Disabilities.
The school has a full-time Nurse and Physiotherapist and pupils have access to an integrated service offered through Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Music Therapy, Social Services, and specialist peripatetic teachers as required (Visual or Hearing Impairment.
The school is located next tot the mainstream secondary school and some of the pupils attend integrated lessons or use their school facilities - e.g. sports hall, library etc.

The School has several facilities that are accessible to students:
-Home Economics Room
-Soft Play Cabin
-Hydrotherapy Pool
The School runs Minibuses which are used to support learning activities - Swimming, College Links, Work Experience day trips, etc.
They employ their own Teacher to act as Regional Tutor for Makaton signing and they routinely use Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) to support students. All staff are accredited in Team-Teach approach to managing behaviour. This is a whole school approach that ranges from understanding behaviour and de-escalation techniques to safely intervening if physical restraint is required.


The school is organized into two Departments - Key Stage Three and Post Fourteen and they deliver a broad, balanced, and relevant curriculum based around the National Curriculum. Each pupil is assessed using P Scales' and progress is monitored and evaluated through Key Personal Leaning Targets. The school maintains daily contact with parents and carers through a system of Home -School Diaries and they hold Coffee Mornings every half term for Parents to come into school. A few their pupils regularly use the overnight respite facilities offered by Social Services and where this is the case, they maintain the same level of links as with the home.

Teaching Assistant:
Protocol are currently looking for a Teaching Assistant who can join the LSA team based in Barnet Ideally, you will have experience supporting students with autism across the spectrum.
