Job description
Art Teacher with experience in SEMH (Social Emotional & Mental Health) for a Hospital School in Ilford

Start: April

A small inclusive hospital school in the London Borough of Redbridge is currently seeking an Art SEND Teacher with proven experience interacting with vulnerable people.

The hospital caters for young people who have a variety of challenging mental health issues including: self harm, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts and eating disorders.

Referral to the hospital is usually made via the community CAMHS. There are both planned and emergency admissions to the ward. The unit has capacity for 15 young people, 11 female and 4 male, of both secondary and post 16 age. The students ordinarily stay for between 4-6months before being discharged and transferred to the Home Treatment Team.

Each teacher has a form group comprising of up to 5 students, for which they have to write weekly progress reports. Additionally, each class comprises of around 4 students also. After each class a short report must be submitted grading how well each student met each learning objective.

The role is for 3.5dpw starting at 08:30am. The school day finishes at 3:30pm but all reports must be completed within deadlines so the ideal candidate must be prepared enough to find the time to do so in between planning lessons. On Fridays however, there is only a half day.

Criteria for applying:
-Hold QTS, preferably in Art
-Thorough understanding of SEMH needs and the patient approach needed to educate those with that need
- Positive and engaging approach
- Confident in behaviour management as behaviour can be erratic, volatile and challenging
- Incredibly organised as numerous reports need to be written in order for the students to progress
- Proactive and a genuine passion for working with vulnerable students
