You don’t need years of SEN experience, but you do need to be:
• Calm under pressure
• Naturally nurturing but firm with boundaries
• Confident speaking to children with additional needs
• Happy to sit on the floor, engage in sensory play and model positive behaviour
• Emotionally intelligent and able to read when a child is becoming dysregulated
Building trust with pupils is absolutely key. Many children here need consistency before they feel safe.
Morning Arrival (8:30am–9:00am)
You will support structured entry routines, emotional check-ins and visual timetable transitions.
Classroom Support
You will:
• Support pupils aged 5–11 with EHCPs
• Work 1:1 and in small groups
• Use visual supports and structured communication
• Help pupils regulate during moments of anxiety or frustration
• Provide live feedback during learning
This is not a stand-at-the-back role. You are expected to circulate and actively support learning.
Lunch & Social Time
Staff eat with pupils and model social communication. Lunchtime is part of learning and relationship building.
Pupils leave at 2:30pm. Staff remain until 4:00pm for debriefs, preparation and record keeping.
• Calm, structured classrooms
• Small class sizes (8–10 pupils)
• Clear behaviour scripts and restorative conversations
• De-escalation used consistently
• Team Teach offered long term
Experience working with children or young people is desirable, particularly within SEN, care or youth settings. However, it is not essential.
