Primary Teaching and Learning Assistants Learning Support Assistant

A friendly and supportive primary school is looking for a caring and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant to deliver phonics interventions across EYFS and KS1. If you’re passionate about early literacy and enjoy seeing those lightbulb moments when reading finally clicks, we’d love to hear from you.

This is a part-time, term-time role, perfect for someone who enjoys working closely with young learners and making a real impact in the classroom.

About the role

You’ll work alongside class teachers and the SENCo to support pupils with early reading and phonics development. From small group interventions to 1:1 support, you’ll help children build confidence, independence, and strong literacy foundations.

No two mornings are ever quite the same, but every day brings the chance to make a genuine difference.

What you’ll be doing

  • Delivering structured phonics interventions using the school’s chosen phonics programme
  • Supporting children who need extra help with reading, spelling, and communication skills
  • Reinforcing classroom learning through targeted activities
  • Monitoring pupil progress and sharing feedback with teaching staff
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing
  • Working collaboratively as part of a welcoming school team

What the school is looking for

You’ll be a great fit if you:

  • Have experience working with children in a primary school setting, ideally EYFS or KS1
  • Understand early reading and phonics development
  • Feel confident supporting small groups or delivering 1:1 interventions
  • Bring patience, positivity, and encouragement to your work
  • Communicate well and enjoy being part of a team
  • Believe every child deserves support to succeed

Experience with recognised phonics schemes such as Letters and Sounds or other DfE-approved programmes would be helpful, but it’s not essential.

What’s on offer

  • A welcoming and supportive school community
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities
  • The chance to make a real impact on children’s learning outcomes
  • A rewarding role within a caring and collaborative team

Safeguarding and compliance

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All applicants will be subject to comprehensive safeguarding and compliance checks including:

  • Enhanced Child Workforce DBS, ideally registered on the Update Service
  • Professional references covering the last two years
  • Right to work checks
  • Online and social media checks as part of safer recruitment
  • Verification of qualifications and employment history

If you’re ready to help young readers grow in confidence, one sound at a time, this could be the perfect role for you.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQs on the Protocol Education website for further details.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.

Protocol Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with the DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’, this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
We offer FREE online safeguarding and Prevent Duty training to all our workers. All candidates must undertake or have undertaken a valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and subscribe to the DBS Update Service.

Full assistance provided. For details of our privacy policy, please see visit the Protocol Education website.
