Job description
Our school in the borough of Brent are looking for a Poolside Assistant to support a Swimming Instructor with classes throughout the day at their state of the art Swimming Hydrotherapy complex. This is a special school and cater for students with Severe Learning Difficulties, Complex Needs, Autism and students with Challenging Behaviours.
Pool assistants work with and are responsible to the pool instructor, being line managed by assistant head of transdisciplinary teams.
Pool Assistants are responsible for assisting in all of the duties involved with maintaining a safe and clean pool area whilst supporting the pool instructor to deliver high quality lessons that run smoothly.
Main duties
1. Contribute to the effective delivery of swimming lessons
Pool assistants will be able to assist the pool instructor in delivering high quality lessons and provide support where necessary to achieve this. This will require getting into the pool to assist in some classes as well as background support out of the pool in other classes.
2. Ensure staff and students follow Pool Rules
Pool Assistants are responsible for making staff and students aware of the pool rules and calling out those who break these rules. Pool Assistants must have good interpersonal skills to sense conflicts before they escalate.
3. Provide Basic lifeguard cover
Pool assistants will be required to spot for the pool instructor in a range of classes and undertake basic lifeguard cover as required in conjunction with the pool instructor.
4. Provide support with personal care and manual handling
Pool assistants will assist class staff during their swimming session to provide support with personal care and manual handling. They will be given appropriate training to operate equipment used to get students in and out of the pool.
5. Cleaning and maintenance of all pool and changing areas as required.
Pool Assistant's will always keep the pool area clean . Antiskid floor tiles need constant maintenance and washing with chemicals. Changing rooms need to be kept neat and tidy. Moving and handling equipment must be kept in good order, reporting any damages to OT.
6. Maintenance of the pool plant room
Pool assistants must assist in always keeping the pool plant room neat and tidy. Pool assistants will support the pool instructor to regularly clean and replace filters which easily get clogged by oils, hair, and natural debris.
7. Assisting in Measuring and Documenting Pool Chemical Levels
The pool is maintained by digital systems that automatically feed chemicals to the pool. It is the pool instructor's responsibility to maintain correct chemical levels in the pool. Pool Assistants should have an awareness of how to operate these machines, record measurements, log readings and make adjustments under supervision of the pool instructor.

Pool Assistant Skills
Organizational Skills: Pool Assistants call upon their organizational skills to keep moving and handling plan, maintain log books for chemical readings and order supplies.
Observational Skills: Pool Assistants call upon their observational skills to maintain a safe environment. They must pay attention to the state of equipment and the environment.
Basic Problem-Solving Skills: Pool Assistants need basic problem solving skills to be able to get the most out of a class' swimming slot.
Communication Skills: Pool Assistants use interpersonal skills to diffuse miscommunication and conflict between staff in the pool environment. They also use verbal communication skills to have positive interactions with numerous transdisciplinary teams across the school.
