Are you a graduate looking to gain hands-on experience supporting children's social, emotional and mental health before progressing into a career in education, psychology or therapy?

We're working with a welcoming primary school in Bromley Heath looking for an SEMH Mentor to provide dedicated 1:1 support for a Key Stage 2 pupil with an autism profile.

This is an excellent opportunity for graduates considering careers in educational psychology, clinical psychology, counselling, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, social work or teaching. You'll work alongside an experienced SEN team, helping one child feel safe, supported and confident in school while developing valuable experience in a specialist educational setting.

The role

As an SEMH Mentor, you'll provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day, helping a pupil develop emotional regulation, confidence and independence.

Working closely with the class teacher and SENCO, you'll use personalised strategies to support the child's social communication, emotional wellbeing and engagement with learning. You'll also assist with small group interventions where appropriate.

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has a degree in Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies, Health and Social Care or a related subject, although graduates from all disciplines are welcome
  • Has a genuine interest in children's social, emotional and mental health
  • Is calm, empathetic and patient
  • Can build trusting, positive relationships with children
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Has experience working with children or young people through tutoring, mentoring, coaching, youth work, volunteering or care, although this isn't essential

What you'll receive

  • Pay from £14.25 per hour, with increases based on experience
  • Weekly PAYE pay
  • Access to specialist SEND and SEMH training, alongside a wide range of CPD opportunities
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated Protocol Education consultant
  • Excellent experience for graduates applying for teacher training or postgraduate courses in psychology, therapy or education
  • Opportunities to progress into long-term and permanent school-based roles

Requirements

  • Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
  • Two years of satisfactory references
  • Right to work in the UK

This is a long-term position supporting a pupil with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), with funding currently in place until August 2030, subject to review.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All appointments are subject to satisfactory safeguarding and compliance checks.

If you're looking for a role where you can develop your skills, gain invaluable experience and make a lasting difference to a child's wellbeing and education, we'd love to hear from you.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQs on the Protocol Education website for further details.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
