1:1 SEMH Behaviour Support Assistant

Location: Durham
Job Type: Supply Teaching
Industry: SEN Support Jobs

Salary: £89.35 - 100.00 per day
Job Published: about 1 hour ago

Looking to make a real difference to a young person who needs someone calm, consistent, and genuinely on their side? This could be your perfect role.

We’re supporting a welcoming school in the Durham area who are looking for a compassionate Behaviour Support Assistant to work 1:1 with a pupil with SEMH needs. The school is searching for someone who can bring patience, humour, and a steady presence to each day… the kind of person who can spot when a wobble is coming and help steer things back on track.

What you’ll be doing

  • Providing 1:1 support for a pupil with social, emotional, and mental health needs

  • Helping the student access learning in a way that feels safe and achievable

  • Building trust through routines, positive relationships, and a consistent approach

  • Working closely with the SENCO, class teacher, and wider pastoral team

  • Supporting emotional regulation, de-escalation, and calm transitions throughout the day

What we’re looking for

You don’t need a long list of qualifications, but you do need the right attitude. The school would love someone who is:

  • Calm under pressure and brilliant at reading the room

  • Resilient, empathetic, and genuinely child-focused

  • Experienced in SEMH, youth work, mentoring, or challenging behaviour

  • Great at building relationships and setting gentle, firm boundaries

  • Ready to be that steady person a pupil can rely on

If you’ve worked in alternative provisions, PRUs, residential care, or similar settings, that’s a big bonus.
