"Last week I received a phone call from Kelly Selby-Jones who is a Protocol Education consultant for SEN schools in London. I had been excited to work in an SEN school since arriving in London in February and finally had the opportunity, through the all-new Protocol London SEN Team. Although the school I worked at was over an hour and a half away from my house, I was still keen to teach at this school for the day.
From the beginning, Kelly was totally honest with me and told me about the travel that was involved. She also was completely up front about the type of school she was sending me to and the type of children that I could expect to be teaching. Her honesty and advice made the day so much easier as I knew what to expect and had some strategies to make my day run smoothly.
The six children that I had in my class were all non-verbal children who were taught solely ‘life-skills’ throughout the day. This meant that my day was filled with simple activities that included using a spoon to eat, interacting with adults and using symbols to express needs. The advice that I was given prior to my day at this SEN school was extremely helpful as I was more prepared for this and the reactions from the children.
Of course there were difficult times throughout my day. The children often became quite frustrated and dealt with this in a number of ways. It was necessary to physically restrain children at times so that they didn’t cause harm to themselves or others. And, although all the children were non-verbal, this definitely wasn’t a quite classroom as all children made a variety of noises to express their needs and sometimes this was very loud! Having said this, the children were very sweet and accepted me into their classroom immediately. I would definitely recommend to anyone who was thinking of working in an SEN school to contact the Protocol SEN team and experience this type of work! It is a truly rewarding and enjoyable experience!"
