Behaviour Management Saga Part IV

Yar, welcome back! We were in the midst of discussing the Five Cruxes of Behaviour Management in the classroom, whether back home in my native Canada or here in beautiful London town it does not matter – behaviour management constitutes up to 80% of a teacher’s job no matter what part of this fine, fragile globe you inhabit. But before we turn our attentions back, I must share a recent ‘episode’ that happened to me on the Southbank a couple short weeks ago.

A Royal Digression

I was on my way home from work and heading for Westminster on the Jubilee Line when signal failure brought us to a grinding halt at Southwark. Normally I opine the shame that is humanity’s colossal reliance on computer systems and silicon switches, and I will also curse the ancient Roman’s pantheon of pagan gods for good measure when something unexpected happens on the line, but this time I thought, “Well then, what an excellent opportunity to stroll along the Thames on the way to whichever District Line station that strikes my fancy along the way.”

I decided to go for Embankment but I got royally side-tracked. I was walking innocently past the National Theatre and under Waterloo Bridge where there I stumbled upon a long red carpet and the formidable black steely row of Paparazzi lining every square inch of it.

While I had been born at night, it certainly wasn’t last night, so I asked the nearest person what was going on. That’s when I heard the 3 magical words every Canadian wishes he/she will hear at some point in their short yet sweet lives: “Will and Kate!”

Here I must make a manly confession: I swooned. 

They mentioned Samuel L. Jackson and Lionel Richie and something about African cats but I wasn’t listening anymore. A black car had pulled up and a man flourished an umbrella the moment he exited one of its doors, only to walk around and open another door and…and…the Duchess of Cambridge, one-day Princess Catherine!

She of the light slipper, the happy gait, the physique that bespeaks easy athleticism and a bearing that is not at all congruous with her proletariat upbringing. Sigh. They came within 8 feet of me. Sigh. Will and Kate, you are beautiful immortal.

Humble reader, forgive me my daytime distractions – there be behaviour to be modified!

Back to the Future - Explanation of the 3rd Crux

The 3rd crux is: Rules and Rewards for Behaviour must include Group & Individual Responsibility.

Inevitably, some students will simply not be in a position to follow the rules of the classroom from day to day (not within their control), and still some others simply want to watch Rome burn. There will be only 1 – 4 of these students in any given classroom and it is important, therefore, that individual responsibility is structured in such a way that the group does not suffer from special behaviour cases. Encouragement of the group to ‘rein’ in an individual’s special behaviour is beneficial and ought to happen of its own accord once a solid and consistent individual and group behaviour reward system is in place.

My Royal Digression hath cost us much time in this scurrilous port but barring such a surreal episode from the log books does smack of silliness and dare I say, mutiny. Yar, in the next blog we shall find the final 2 cruxes and possibly catch a glimpse of the forbidden Game of Donkey!
